Updated: May 30, 2023

5 Tips to maximize the lifespan of your architectural shingles

As a Team with 25 years experience in the roofing industry, Asguard Roofing’s Elite roofers are well-qualified to offer tips on how to extend the life an asphalt roof system in Louisiana. Our team has a deep understanding of the challenges that come with maintaining a roof in a hot humid climate and we have developed strategies to help homeowners prolong the life of their roof.

In this article, we will provide five practical tips that homeowners can follow to ensure their roof system lasts as long as possible. From proper installation to regular maintenance and inspections, these tips are designed to help homeowners maximize the life of their roof and avoid costly repairs and replacements.

Tip No. 1 - Proper Installation

Hire a licensed and experienced roofing contractor to properly install shingles as well as all other components of a properly secured roofing system. Include adequate ventilation and flashing to prevent leaks.

Tip No. 2 - Proper Attic Ventilation

Adequate ventilation is important to prevent heat buildup and excessive moisture which can shorten the life of the shingles. Too much ventilation can be a bad thing as well. Talk to your roofing contractor about properly ventilating the home. Believe it or not, this can have a significant impact on the life of shingles.

Tip No. 3 - Use quality materials

Use high quality shingles that are rated for high wind resistance and impact resistance. The better the quality of the materials, the longer the life of the roof system.

We love to use Owens Corning Duration series shingles, not only because of their architectural look but they also perform very well under pressure. See link below...

Tip No. 4 - Regular Inspection

Regular inspections can help identify problems early on, such as missing or damaged shingles. We can’t stress the importance of this. There are multiple components to a quality roof system and we must allow for timely repairs before small things become a bigger issue.

Damaged and missing shingles lead to water saturation. Water saturation leads to damaged decking. Damaged decking leads to rotten wood and leaks inside the home. Our point - problems only get worse. Catch it early!

Tip No. 5 - Regular maintenance

Remove debris such as leaves and branches to avoid moisture buildup. Keep gutters and downspouts clean to ensure proper drainage.

Water sheds very well off of a pitched roof. Issues typically arise in valleys, around vents, and anywhere moisture is allowed to build up on the roof. Maintain the roof and you maintain the life of the shingles!
